Description: Translation has always been the medium of communication among nations of different tongues. The role and status of translation has been underestimated and unrecognized but has now begun to attract attention. This course introduces translation as a discipline, and tracks its development, its schools of thought, and theories and practices. We will offer various case studies and discuss how translation reflects power relations, identities, societal interactions, and ideologies. The course will expose students to different types of texts with the objective of developing the necessary skills to translate them.
More Information:
Participants who attend at least 8 complete seminar sessions will receive a certificate of satisfactory completion from the Dean of The New School for Social Research. In order to obtain the certificate, participants must register and log in with the same email address each week.
Registration will remain open for the duration of the seminar. Registrants will receive a reminder email with the Zoom link each week.
The seminar sessions will be recorded and available to registrants on Vimeo the following week.

Dr. Nael Hijjo
Dr. Nael Hijjo is Mellon Fellow at Columbia Global Centers in Amman, Columbia University, and a scholar member of the New University in Exile Consortium. He holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Translation Studies. His areas of expertise include Translation Studies, Intercultural Communication, Discourse Analysis, Narrative Inquiry, Framing Theory, and Middle Eastern Studies.
Dr. Kais Kadhim
Dr. Kais Kadhim is Associate Professor at University of Malaysia, Terengganu. He has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Translation from University of Science Malaysia. His main research interest is cultural linguistics, media discourse, stylistics and translation studies. He has published 43 papers in cultural linguistics and translation theory in Scopus, Web of Science, and refereed journals.
