Hosted by UCLA School of Law, Teng Biao presented his talk “Politics of the Human Rights Movement in China” on March 5th, 2020.
In his talk, Biao discusses the Rights Defense Movement in China as it emerged in the early 2000s when a social space was available after the development of legal professions, market economy, internet, and ideological revision. His talk notes that this movement has been politicized both inside the movement and by the government, and its achievements and current predicament reflect the profound political implications of China today.
Teng Biao is a human rights lawyer, and currently the Grove Human Rights Scholar at Hunter College, the City University of New York. He is one of the earliest promoters of the Human Rights Defense Movement in China and the manifesto Charter 08. Teng has received various international human rights awards including the Human Rights Prize of the French Republic.
