Webinar: Free Speech and Academic Freedom: Friends or Foes?

Wednesday, May 4, 2022; 4:00-5:00 PM

Free speech and academic freedom are foundational for higher education. But how are these two concepts related? Do they complement each other or do they compete? Is academic freedom an individual right? Is academic freedom a First Amendment right?

Join us for a conversation with Nadine Strossen, New York Law School Professor Emerita and former president of the American Civil Liberties Union (1991-2008) on free speech and academic freedom. She serves on the advisory boards of the ACLU, Academic Freedom Alliance, Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), Heterodox Academy, and National Coalition Against Censorship. The National Law Journal has named Strossen one of America’s “100 Most Influential Lawyers.” Her 2018 book HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship was selected by Washington University as its 2019 “Common Read.”
