In this article, Gümrükçü describes the effects that the 2013 Gezi Park Protests had on the political landscape in Turkey. “The AKP government turned a crisis into an opportunity right after the Gezi Park protests that quickly spread around the country and turned into anti-government protests. Seizing the opportunity, the government took a bolder step towards populism, as its rhetoric became ‘very populist’ and the streets were ‘hijacked’ from actors demanding democracy.”
