NEW SCHOOL NEWS FEATURES CONSORTIUM SCHOLAR, GAUDÊNCIO FIDELIS

Gaudêncio Fidelis, a well-established Brazilian museum curator, was forced to flee Brazil in 2019 after curating “Queermuseum: Cartographies of Difference in Brazilian Art” in 2017 focused on gender and sexual expression. This exhibit drew the ire of right wing groups and was forced to close after 17 days. It was ultimately reopened in another gallery in Sao Paulo, even though Fidelis continued to receive multiple media attacks and death threats and was believed to be under surveillance until he left the country to come here.
