Teoman Aktan, Ph.D.

Biography

Dr. Teoman Aktan earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Istanbul University in 2018. He was first expelled from the Iranian academy in 2011 due to his human rights and political activities and was ultimately forced to flee the country following severe threats to his life. Since 2016, he has worked extensively to defend the rights of refugees and migrants in Turkey with UNHCR, Doctors Without Borders, and Human Resources Development Foundation. In 2019, Aktan was again forced to live in exile due to the harassment he received from the Iranian government for his human rights activities. In 2020, he received a research fellowship from Columbia Global Centers | Amman. He organized two courses on the state of democratization and academic freedom in the Middle East through the OFF-University with the support of the New University in Exile Consortium. He is an academic member of OFF-University. Aktan is fluent in Turkish, Persian, Dari, Azerbaijani, English, and Ottoman Turkish, and is proficient in Arabic. He is engaged in translation activities and has published works on the political history and politics of the Middle East.
