Baku court rejects appeal; Consortium Scholar Gubad Ibadoghlu remains in detention

August 1, 2023

On August 1, a Narminov district court in Baku rejected Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu’s lawyer’s request that Dr. Ibadoghlu be transferred to house arrest while awaiting trial. This request came after reports that Dr. Ibadoghlu is being held in an exceedingly unsanitary environment and being denied access to food, clean water, and vital medications required to treat his diabetes and hypertension. With the court’s rejection, Dr. Ibadoghlu has now been detained under these unconscionable conditions for nine days.

This follows a similar decision from this past Friday, July 28, when a Baku Appeals Court rejected the appeal of Dr. Ibadoghlu’s detention.

Above: Prior to the ruling, people from across Baku and many different political parties, as well as representatives from the U.S. and U.K. embassies, gathered outside of the court to show their support for Dr. Ibadoghlu.

If you have not already, please sign our petition demanding the immediate release of Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu from detention.
