“Research Under Constraint: Academic Freedom, Exile, and Returning to Syria”
Country of Origin: Syria
Location: UK
Using my own experience as a starting point, this talk explores the intersection of academic freedom, political conflict, and scholarly research through my experience as a Syrian scholar. After leaving Syria in 2014 because of the war, I was unable to return for more than a decade. The talk will explore the practical and ethical challenges of conducting research in authoritarian states and conflict settings, the difficult decisions scholars sometimes make to protect themselves and others, and the broader implications for academic freedom. The talk also reflects on the role of universities and international academic networks in supporting scholars whose research and careers are shaped by political repression and displacement.
Willing to share personal story.
