“Writing as Resistance: Women’s Fiction and the Struggle for Voice in Contemporary Afghanistan”

This talk explores how contemporary Afghan women writers use fiction not only as a literary medium, but also as a vehicle for preserving memory, challenging patriarchal norms, and resisting political and social oppression. Drawing on my research on Afghan women’s literature and my experience teaching creative writing to Afghan women and girls, I examine how storytelling fosters spaces for identity, resilience, and cultural survival amid censorship, displacement, and conflict. The lecture will also reflect on the intersection of literature and academic freedom, highlighting the vital role of writing in sustaining intellectual life during times of crisis.
